Flame on

Posted by Daniel & Jessica (Melbourne, Australia) on 27 June 2007 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Every night on the hour, these monster fireballs erupt from outside Melbourne's Crown Casino, casting cheerful glows on the glassy, cold Yarra River.

The powerful blast of hot air reaches well across the river. It has been said that birds with the unfortunate coincidence of flying past have fallen to the ground, well-done.

It was quite a challenging shot to take because I didn't have tripod with me and the fireball intervals only last for a few seconds. Somehow it turned out passably alright.

If you notice closely the fireball is the principal light source for the picture. If not for it, we'd only see pinpricks of light from windows. The fireball brings out the details of its surroundings like a candle in a dark cave of glow worms.
